Prime Minister of Japan
Sanae Takaichi is a veteran Japanese politician and conservative leader who became Japan’s first female Prime Minister in October 2025. Born in Nara Prefecture in 1961, she has been elected to the House of Representatives since 1993 and has held a series of key ministerial portfolios including Internal Affairs & Communications and Economic Security. A loyal ally of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, she is known for her nationalist views, admiration of Margaret Thatcher and hawkish security and economic policies. Her rise signals both a gender-breakthrough in Japanese politics and a rightward shift in the governing LDP’s leadership.
Takaichi was born 7 March 1961 in Yamatokōriyama, Nara Prefecture, and grew up in a middle-class family. She attended Nara Prefectural Unebi High School before commuting long distances to attend university.
First woman to serve as Prime Minister of Japan.
Frequently referred to in media as “Japan’s Iron Lady” due to her Thatcher-style conservatism.
