Mercedes-Benz is planning to go all-electric by the end of the decade if market conditions allow. The luxury vehicle business is shifting from electric-first to electric-only mode, aiming for an emissions-free and software-driven future.

From 2025 on, all new vehicle designs will be electric-only, and consumers will be able to select an all-electric option for any model the firm produces.

“The EV shift is picking up speed - especially in the luxury segment, where Mercedes-Benz belongs. The tipping point is getting closer and we will be ready as markets switch to electric-only by the end of this decade,” said Ola Källenius, CEO of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG, in a statement.

Additionally, Mercedes-Benz will also introduce three all-electric architectures in 2025.

Daimler revealed that MB.EA, for medium and large passenger cars; AMG.EA, for performance electric vehicle platform; and VAN.EA, for light commercial vehicles and vans. Models based on these platforms will only be available in the electrified form.

Mercedes intends to build 5,30,000 charging stations worldwide to accomplish this. Between 2022 and 2030, investments in e-cars will total more than €40 billion ($47 billion).

“Our main duty in this transformation is to convince customers to make the switch with compelling products. For Mercedes-Benz, the trailblazing EQS flagship is only the beginning of this new era,” Källenius said.

Mercedes will create eight gigafactories with worldwide partners to manufacture the cells required for its cars. This would be in addition to plans to build nine factories devoted to the development of battery systems.

The company aims to collaborate with new European partners to develop and effectively manufacture future cells and modules, ensuring that "Europe remains at the heart of the auto industry even in an electric era," it added.
