McDonald’s Corp. said on Thursday that almost all the paper
food packaging used in restaurants is made up of recycled or sustainable fiber.
In its annual sustainability report, the burger chain stated
that 99.6 percent of the paper bags, food wrappers, napkins, cup carriers, and
other fiber-based materials it used to package meals for customers in 2020 came
from recycled or certified sustainable fiber sources.
As McDonald's operates in over 39,000 locations worldwide,
small steps can have a huge impact on other businesses as well as the environment.
Many restaurants and businesses are moving towards
sustainable and eco-friendly packing by using recyclable and biodegradable
materials.
Moreover, the company encourages restaurant operators to
serve meals on trays to customers who dine indoors due to a bag scarcity.
According to the NPD Group, a consumer research
organization, over 81 percent of restaurant operations in the 12 months ending
June 30 were takeaway orders, an increase of 18 percent from the same time the previous year so eventually, there is an increase in paper packaging.
McDonald's has set a larger goal for all of its customers
packagings to come from renewable, recycled, or certified sources by 2025.
Currently, 80% of its packaging comes from such sources. It is also using paper
straws and wooden cutlery in multiple markets, it said and is exploring fiber
lids and reusable cups, Reuters reported.
