Twitter posted better-than-expected revenue growth as the company launched ad targeting improvements aiding brands in reaching customers.

Advertising revenue increased 87% as compared to the same quarter in the last year at $1.05 billion topping Wall Street estimates of $909.9 million.

"We get great signal about what people are most interested in, where they are or the places they care about," said Twitter Chief Financial Officer Ned Segal, reported Reuters.

The company said the improvements clubbed with demand from advertisers to find consumers aided high ad revenue.

Twitter has launched 2,500 new topic categories in the quarter in order to improve its ads. This has helped users find suitable content providing more ad targeting data to Twitter.

Twitter is expecting an increase of at least 30% in headcount and total costs and expenses for the full year.

Twitter has forecasted total revenue for the third quarter to be between $1.22 billion to $1.3 billion
