Sony Group Corp said on Wednesday that PlayStation 5, or PS5, has sold more than 10 million units since its launch in last November.

PS5, whose demand has risen amid spike in gaming as people are spending more time indoors, is in short supply due to global semiconductor supply chains restrains in the COVID-19 pandemic

"We've built more PlayStations faster than we ever have before which makes me happy. But on the other hand, we're some time from being able to meet all the demand that's out there, which makes me feel bad," Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan, reported Reuters.

"Our partners are performing really well for us, but the chip shortage is definitely a challenge that we are all navigating," Ryan said.

PS5 has surpassed the sales of PS4 with exclusive games such as Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which has sold more than 6.5 million copies.

For PS4, the Japanese firm took around nine months to sell 10 million units and has sold more than 100 million units of the console since November 2013.

Electronics makers are deeply affected by the semiconductor shortages with Apple saying on Tuesday that the shortage is affecting iPhone production.
