Qualcomm enters deal with Microsoft for AR glasses

Qualcomm Inc said on Tuesday it is working with Microsoft Corp to design chips that would control augmented reality glasses for metaverse apps.

Qualcomm Chief Executive Cristiano Amon said at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that the companies will work together to create the custom chips.

He added that a software from Microsoft called Mesh will be used for future devices allowing users to experience themselves into the headset of another user creating the illusion that they are in the same room.

The future devices will also use software from Qualcomm called Snapdragon Spaces to enhance the experience of augmented reality functions.

"We've been talking for years about the possibility of having wearable augmented reality devices that will gain scale," said Amon from a live-streamed talk on stage in Las Vegas.

The details about the availability of chips and headsets are not yet provided by the companies.

“Our goal is to inspire and empower others to collectively work to develop the metaverse future – a future that is grounded in trust and innovation,” Rubén Caballero, corporate vice president for mixed reality at Microsoft, said in a statement.
