US President Joe Biden to visit a town in Poland near the Ukrainian border on Friday, in a gesture seen as to demonstrate Western fortitude in the face of Russia's incursion.

“President Biden will be greeted by Polish President Duda in Rzeszow, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the Ukrainian border,” the White House said in a statement.

Members of the US 82nd Airborne Division, which is deployed on NATO's eastern border, will also meet with the US president.

Troops will be deployed in Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Bulgaria, and Ukraine's chemical and nuclear defenses will be strengthened, according to the NATO emergency meeting held earlier this week.

The visit to Poland, according to the White House, is meant to draw attention to the tremendous refugee problem that has erupted since Russia's war in Ukraine began a month ago.

Around 100,000 civilians are said to be stuck in the southern part country, which is running out of food and water.
